Why Bore Geometry — Not Hardness Alone — Decides Nozzle Service Life
A carbide nozzle does not fail when it wears. It fails when the jet it shapes stops being a jet.
Abrasive waterjet and powder-blast systems live or die by the coherence of the stream leaving the nozzle. Hardness gets the attention, but in our experience the bore profile is what separates a nozzle that lasts a shift from one that lasts a month.
Where the Wear Actually Happens
Sectioning used nozzles tells a consistent story: the inlet cone erodes first, the throat second, and the exit almost never. That ordering is a direct consequence of impingement angle. Every geometry decision we make starts from that observation rather than from a materials datasheet.
How We Machine Them
1. Grinding the Blank
Sintered carbide blanks are ground to outer diameter and length on diamond wheels, with feed rates kept low enough that surface damage never reaches the depth that later lapping has to remove.
2. Lapping the Bore
The bore is lapped to a mirror finish and checked for straightness along its full length. This is the slowest step in the process and the one that most directly determines service life.
Three Things That Shorten Nozzle Life
Most premature failures we are asked to investigate trace back to one of the following:
Inlet Erosion
Abrasive media strikes the inlet cone at the steepest angle in the whole flow path. A radius that is even slightly too tight concentrates wear into a ring that widens fast.
Bore Straightness
A bore that drifts by a few microns over its length turns a coherent jet into a spray. We lap every bore and verify straightness before the part leaves the cell.
Grade Selection
Finer grain grades resist erosion but chip more readily under impact. Matching grade to media and pressure matters more than chasing a hardness number.
Specify the Flow Path, Not Just the Part
Send us the media, the pressure, and the duty cycle alongside the drawing. A nozzle specified against the real flow path routinely outlasts a harder nozzle specified against a number.
